Academic difficulties are also frequent. The symptoms are especially difficult to define because it is hard to draw a line at where normal levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity end and clinically significant levels requiring intervention begin. To be diagnosed with ADHD, symptoms must be observed in two different settings for six months or more and to a degree that is greater than other children of the same age.

Great film and film hosting--kudos for expanding this conversation. Please keep me informed of your future initiatives. I want to support what you do, especially if it is in challenging and supporting schools to transform the way we teach students. We CAN make a difference by helping move classrooms from teacher-directed to student-centered! The methods and practices are out there and working. And every educator knows that it's possible, and yes harder at first, to accomplish. They just need some advocates within each school, especially parents. You and your kids are the customers!

Thanks to Anne and everyone at Rhinebeck Youth for the extraordinary time and effort made towards the benefit of all of Rhinebeck's kids and the community at large. Our kids are facing difficult and unique challenges with academics, drugs and technology. While views on the subject matter of Race to Nowhere are diverse, the film does provide an important perspective that cannot be discounted. Thanks for sharing. And thanks to the Church of the Messiah for providing important financial support!

Yes, Geralidine, as part of the DEA's National Drug Take Back Event, the Community Coalition for Rhinebeck Youth is hosting a medication drop off location on October 29th from 10am-2pm at Northern Dutchess Hospital. As we did when we hosted our drop off location in April of this year, we are partnering with Rhinebeck Village Police to provide a convenient, secure, no-questions-asked opportunity for all area residents to dispose of their unused and no-longer-needed prescription AND over-the-counter medication. We collected 106 pounds of medication in April, which means that 106 pounds of assorted drugs were kept from potentially polluting the environment and/or causing harm to individuals in our community. Please spread the word about the Drug Take Back on October 29th. Encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to participate as well. We hope to see you there.

A number of people have asked about the relationship between the Rhinebeck Central School District, the Community Coalition for Rhinebeck Youth, and the greater Rhinebeck-area copmmunity in terms of drug and alcohol curricula and programs for young people. In response, interested individuals should be aware that the RCSD has the sole responsibility for evaluating/implementing curriculum and other programs that are provided to the District’s students, including those that relate to substance abuse education and prevention. The District also is keenly interested in continuing to provide, and to expand wherever and whenever possible, opportunities for our community’s youth to acquire the tools and skills to make informed, intelligent, safe and healthy decisions regarding substance use and abuse. As a result of this interest, District staff serve as active members of the Community Coalition for Rhinebeck Youth (CC4RY) and have been. The District welcomes the input and support of community groups such as CC4RY in addressing that goal in a collaborative effort through partnership with local and regional governmental, law enforcement, advocacy, faith-based and judicial groups, agencies, and organizations.

The presenters had the same impression, Susan, and we were all very encouraged with students participation in Health & Wellness Day. We were pleasantly surprised how open and curious students were about the topic of substance use. As one physician (presenter) said "you could almost see the wheels turning in their heads...it was very moving to be part of the disucssion and to see first hand how we can help influence their (middle schoolers) decision making process". Thanks for commenting!

I was amazing to see how engaged the middle school students were during the workshop on substance awareness. This is a great age to teach students those lessons.
